Raymond Dale Cowan will be the new police chief in Ridgecrest after the only other candidate for the post -- John Mitchell Smith -- was disqualified from the race during proceedings in Seventh Judicial District Court in Vidalia.

Judge Glen Strong ordered on July 20 that Smith's name be removed from the Oct. 2 general election ballot.

Cowan had challenged Smith's candidacy over residency, claiming that Smith lived outside the boundaries of Ridgecrest.

Cowan will take office in January.
