Todd Slavant knows the odds he's facing running against Rep. Rodney Alexander in the GOP primary for the 5th Congressional District.

But the Ouachita Parish native is counting on voters looking to make changes in the nation's leadership.

"I don't have the money my opponent has, that's why I am running a grass roots campaign and relying on citizens to recruit others," said Slavant, a Monroe construction and property management business owner who spoke to the Vidalia Lions Club on July 21.

"The Republican National Committee has been hijacked," Slavant said.

Slavant is part of the Tea Party political movement and is campaigning to reduce federal government spending, shrink the size of government and to repeal the federal health-care legislation championed by President Barack Obama.
