Michael Kelly Stevens faces life in Welch murder

Michael Kelly Stevens, 41, convicted last week in the stabbing death of a Vidalia man, will be sentenced Aug. 25th by Judge Leo Boothe.

A 12-member jury found Stevens guilty Friday after 45 minutes of deliberation for the first degree murder of Michael Welch, 52, of Vidalia. Welch was almost decapitated during the commission of the crime in his Vidalia home in October 2009.

The jury was chosen Monday, Aug. 9, and the five-day trial featured more than 200 prosecution exhibits before reaching its verdict at 1:05 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13.
