Vernon Stevens announces retirement as Riverland administrator
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Vernon Stevens is retiring as administrator of Riverland Medical Center in Ferriday.

"It's time," Stevens said.

Stevens announced his plans in a letter to RMC directors and department heads. He gave 60-day notice. His retirement is effective October 25.

"Changes in federal and state regulations and cuts in hospital payments have increased the stresses inherent to the administrator's job duties in a small, rural hospital to a level that eventually leads to health problems," Stevens wrote in the letter.

Stevens, 62, spent 29 years at Riverland, almost 24 years as an administrator.

"I've seen a lot of changes," he said. "About every 10 years Medicare does a flip flop on you. I've seen three of those. It's always been tough, but it gets tougher every year with state budget cuts and Medicaid cuts. You still have to make enough to keep the doors open and pay everybody."
