Story Archives: LSU playing under the radar this year

LSU playing under the radar this year
by Jake Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
With the SEC West being as stacked as it is going into the 2010 season, LSU has become just another dog in the pack.

At the SEC Media Days in July, LSU was selected to finish fourth in the West.

I like the fact that LSU is flying under the radar going into the season. That's usually when LSU plays it's best football.

This is how I think things are going to go down this season. I'm hesitant to put myself out there because of play-calling, clock management, and the inconsistent quarterback play.

The first game of the season, the Tigers will take on the North Carolina Tar Heels in Atlanta on September 4.

LSU couldn't find a better test for the first game of the season than playing the Tar Heels.

North Carolina has the best defense in the country and will prove to be a huge test against a struggling, yet talented LSU offense.

The Tigers win this hard-fought game, 20-13.

The following week the Tigers will travel to Tennessee to take on Vanderbilt.

After losing their coach in the summer, Vanderbilt won't be able to hang mentally or physically in this game.

LSU sticks their chests out in this one and blows out the Commodores, 34-14.

The next week the Tigers return to Baton Rouge as they face the Mississippi State Bulldogs in their home opener.

Dan Mullen will keep his team in this game for the most part, but the Tigers will pull away late and win, 31-14.

The Tigers stay home the following week when they take on the Mountaineers of West Virginia in a showcase game.

Remember back in the day when LSU would come out in a showcase game in Tiger Stadium and beat the dog out of their formidable opponent?

That's what this game will be like. West Virginia won't be able to hang in Death Valley with the Tigers as LSU beats the Mountaineers, 28-7.

The next week the Tigers get Tennessee at home.

LSU will be riding high off the West Virginia win and Tennessee will come into town hungry with no pressure.

The Vols will give the Tigers a surprise game, but LSU will weather the storm and win, 24-20.

The following week the Tigers will travel to Gainsville, Fl., to take on the Florida Gators.

By this time Florida quarterback John Brantley will be poised and be a big-time player.

The Gators will give the Tigers their first loss of the season as Florida wins at home, 24-14.

McNeese State rolls into Baton Rouge the following week to take on the Tigers in Tiger Stadium.

LSU will blow the Cowboys out 49-0 and will get some much needed rest before traveling to Auburn.

As the Tigers go on the road to take on the Auburn Tigers, they have one thing on their mind, trap game.

Let's set it up. The Tigers have played eight weeks in a row. Auburn is better this year with a favorable schedule, and looking to pay LSU back for the beating they suffered in Tiger Stadium last season.

This will be a dog fight, or should I say cat fight?

LSU will escape with a 34-27 win.

The Tigers get a bye week and then it is on as they face Alabama at home.

This will be a hard-fought game on both sides. Alabama will get the win with a field goal to beat the Tigers, 20-17.

The Tigers return home next week for their Homecoming against ULM.

After saying Homecoming, I would normally say enough said, but Louisiana Tech gave the Tigers a scare in last year's Homecoming game.

You can bet that things will be different this year, as the Tigers blow out the Warhawks, 42-7.

The Tigers return home the following week when they take on the Ole Miss Rebels.

The Tigers have some pent-up frustration as LSU has yet to beat Ole Miss under head coach Houston Nutt.

The Tigers spread the field and put it on Ole Miss by beating the Rebels 37-17 in Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers travel to Little Rock the following week to take on the Arkansas Razorbacks in what could be the most entertaining game of the season. There are a few matchups in this game to keep your eyes on.

First of all LSU, cornerback Patrick Peterson matched up on Arkansas wide receiver Greg Childs will be outstanding, especially with Arkansas quarterback Ryan Mallet throwing Childs the ball.

Another match-up to look out for is LSU's explosive offense going against a rather average Arkansas defense.

Not to mention the Tigers' physical defense going head-to-head with Arkansas' prolyfic-style offense.

The Tigers win this game in a shoot-out beating the Hogs, 42-35.

Now it's bowl selection time. With Alabama finishing first in the West and LSU finishing second, LSU will most likely go to the bowl where the third-ranked SEC team lands.

With that being the case, the Tigers will return back to Orlando to play in the Capitol One Bowl for the second straight year.

The Tigers will meet Wisconsin looking to get revenge on the Big Ten from a year ago.

LSU wins this game 23-13 and gets their first win in the Capitol One Bowl since 1979. The Tigers defeated Wake Forest 34-10 that year.

So there you have it. The Tigers finish with an 11-2 record, finish second in the West and finish third in the conference. If the Tigers are able to accomplish this feat in 2010, they will have exceeded most people's expectations.
