Story Archives: Trinity reloading in 2010

Trinity reloading in 2010

Riding off the success of last year's MAIS Class A state championship, Trinity looks to start off the new decade the way it finished it off last year.

Trinity head football coach David King, the dean of Miss-Lou coaches entering his 13th season at Trinity, picked up two players from Wilkinson County Christian Academy and Huntington School, which shut down in May, to go with his salty returning veterans.

"I have never had more than 25 players and this year we have 32," King said. "It's been an adjustment for the coaching staff. I have 13 seniors and we have never had from than 13 football players in the same class. But the seniors have done a good job of keeping everybody together. The new players are mixing in well with the guys who have been here."

Senior quarterback Givonni Dent (6-0, 180) returns as the leader of the offense for the 2010 season.

Dent threw for 1,291 yards with 15 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Also returning in the offensive backfield is senior running back Kent King (5-9. 165), junior fullback Daniel Dunaway (5-9, 160) and junior wide receiver Jake Winston (6-11, 160).

Wilkinson County Christian Academy transfer Tip McKenzie will also see plenty of carries. McKenzie rushed for 1,164 yards at WCCA last season.

The offensive line is led by stalwarts Terrance Hunter (6-0, 215, Jr.) and senior Chase Patrick (5-9, 170).

"I feel real good about our offensive line," King said.

Winston (6-1, 160) and senior Trevor Faust (6-0, 170) lead the receiving corps.

The defense will have senior linebacker Chase Fenn (5-7, 205), senior defensive back Nick Partridge (5-8, 145), senior linebacker Kevin Brown (5-9, 190), who played at Huntington last season, and junior Caleb Gillespie (6-0, 164).

"Obviously, the talent is there," King said. "The kids have really worked hard.

Trinity opened its season with a 54-8 win over Prairie View.

Tallulah is the only other team in Trinity's district, assuring the Saints of a playoff spot.
