Vitter, Alexander, Melancon winners Incumbents Sen. David Vitter and Fifth District Congressman Rodney Alexander easily won their party nominations in statewide balloting on Saturday during the party primaries.
Charlies Melancon was the winner of the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate while Randall Todd Hayes, with only 1,529 votes statewide, was named the nominee of the state's Libertarian Party.
In Concordia and throughout the state, Vitter easily outpolled challengers Chet D. Traylor and Nick J. Accardo for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate. Vitter polled 305 voters, or 76 percent of the Concordia Republican vote, while Traylor received 82 votes and Accardo 14.
Statewide, Vitter polled 85,179 votes (88 percent) to 6,835 for Traylor and 5,221 for Accardo.
In the race for Fifth District Congressman, Alexander beat challenger Todd Slavant for the Republican nomination in Concordia with 91 percent of the vote. Alexander polled 364 to Slavant's 35.
Districtwide, Alexander received 14,030 votes (89 percent) to 1,743 for Slavant.
Meanwhile, Charlie Melancon handily won the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate with 77,702 votes statewide (71 percent) to 19,507 for Neeson J. Chauvin Jr. and 12,842 for Cary J. Deaton.
In the Libertarian Party race, Randall Todd Hayes received 8 votes in Concordia to 5 for Anthony Gentile. |
