Ferriday welcomes Block

As if this game needed any subplots.

Rivals Ferriday and Block meet Friday at Melz Field in the Trojans' home opener in a game that has first-year Ferriday coach Chad Harkins taking on a team he coached before moving on to Huntington.

Block coach Benny Vault was Harkins' assistant at Block.

"I'm trying to approach this as another game, but he wants to beat me and I want to beat him." Vault said. "It's a big rivalry. The kids hear about it all week. We just have to be the best prepared we can be."

Harkins is downplaying the contest against his former school.

"There's no special feelings," he said. "It's another game and a game we need to win. We're going out to correct some of the mistakes we made last week."

Ferriday fell to Natchez 14-0 in its opener, while Block defeated Vidalia 18-6.

"Block has some outstanding players and good running backs in VaShawn Davis, Preston Bowman and Ty Bell," Harkins said.

Ferriday will be without DaVante Scott, who suffered a bruised chest against Natchez High.

Admission to the game is $6 for the 7 p.m. kickoff.
