Forks of the Road 1834: George & Jane sold for $1,700

In 1834, one of the planters at the Natchez slave market known as Forks of the Road told a trader he was looking for a coachman.

"This one may suit you, sir," said the trader. "George, step out here."

Brought in bondage to Natchez, George, age 23, was from Virginia where he had driven a carriage for his master for more than four years and had learned to masterfully handle horses. He was forced to leave behind a wife in Richmond and he knew he would never see her again.
