Official says Concordia Health Unit crucial

When voters cast ballots Saturday on whether to renew a 10-year, 1.81-mill property tax supporting the parish health unit, Dr. David Holcombe says he hopes they consider how vital the facility is to Concordia Parish.

"It's very important, especially to those segments of the population that use it the most -- the uninsured and the underinsured," said Holcombe, who holds the dual titles of Regional Administrator and Medical Director for the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals eight-parish Region 6, which includes Concordia.

"Concordia is one of the poorer parishes in Louisiana with some of the poorest health statistics," said Holcombe. He said the parish ranks near the top statewide in unhealthy categories -- lower than average life expectancy, poor physical health, poor health habits, premature death and low birth weight for children.
