Bedbugs (Cimex lectularius) have long been the scourge of the traveler. Almost eliminated after World War II with the extensive use of DDT, they have come back with a vengeance worldwide. Although they do not transmit human illnesses, they feed off human blood and cause irritating bites that can swell up in sensitive individuals. They are also notoriously secretive and can hide out during the day in the tiniest nooks and crevices in mattresses, furniture and wallpaper.
