Story Archives: Another list

Another list
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
I love lists.

I've comprised lists of my favorite things about LSU, top 10 Tiger games, top sports movies, top LSU players who didn't make all-SEC, top local high school games.

I started a poll for the top players on both sides of the river, with Tony Byrne, Joey Porter and Perry Lee Dunn taking the top three spots in Natchez, while Donnie Daye, Jarrett Hoffpauir and Guy Hill taking the top three spots in Concordia Parish.

So I was thrilled to receive a unique list from Benny Millian of the top Vidalia Vikings who never played football because they graduated before the team was formed, they focused on one of two sports or they lived too far from town.

On offense, Milligan listed his ends as Fred Falkenheiner Jr., Dan Sturgeon, Fred Schiele, Hubert Turnage and Charles Knapp.

At tackle, Milligan has Melvin "Peewinkle" Knapp, C.L. Stugeon and Rudy Krueger.

Guards are Audra Talley, LeGran Talley, Skippy Martin and Bobby Comer.

Milligan has Fanny Martin at center.

Quarterbacks are Sonny Vance and Donald Mullins.

Halfbacks are Ralph Knapp and Charles Johnson.

Alton Knapp is the fullback.

Charles Moritzky is the kicker.

Defense ends are Fred Schiele, Ed Schiele, Joe Schiele and Bro Schiele.

Thanksgiving had to be fun around that house.

Defensive tackles are Hubert Turnage, Fanny Martin and Melvin Knapp.

Milligan has C.L. Sturgeon and Skippy Martin at nose tackle.

The linebackers are Audra Talley, Charles Knapp, Alton Knapp and Carl Knapp.

The Knapps against the Schieles would have apparently been a fun rivalry.

Donald Mullins and Sonny Vance are the defensive halfbacks, while Charles Johnson is the safety and the kick returner.

Johnson ran track at LSU.

Milligan said that would be Walter Stampley's dream team, so I imagine Coach Stampley had a little input.

Actually, a lot of these names are familiar because my dad (Skippy Martin) and uncle (Fanny Martin) talked about hanging around with these guys a lot. And, of course, there were plenty of pick-up game stories.

Milligan's brother, Jack, was part of the first Vidalia High footbal team in 1952.

Benny Milligan was part of the first Vidalia team that beat Cathedral on Thanksgiving Day of 1955.

Other players were quarterback Billy Calvert, linemen Malcolm Barlow, Ed Bruce and Sonny Franklin, running backs were Milligan, Ray Morace and John Holland.

Sonny Franklin blocked Sammy Eidt's extra point attempt to give Vidalia a 7-6 win.

Benny says he knows he left some people off the list.

Believe me, Benny, there will be a deserving handful you forgot about or looked over. I haven't made a list yet that there were one or two I regret not putting on there.

But it's still a solid list. And it's always fun looking back.

Ferriday began football in 1927.

It may be a bit difficult coming up with a pre-Bulldog football team. Although I wouldn't put it past Butch Bateman to give it a try. Pressure's on now, Butch.

I actually have plans on putting together a poll for best female athletes of all-time in the parish.

Problem is the ladies did not get too much publicity before the 1970s.

David Jones has volunteered to help come up with a good starting list.

When you look back at all the great past Vidalia and Ferriday girls basketball teams (Aaronette Eifling, Allison May, Judy Poole, Monique Jones, Ann Webster and Gwen Taylor), Huntington softball and basketball teams and Monterey basketball teams, there are so many deserving ladies who will undoubtedly get left out. But it will still be fun to see how the voting would turn out.

Stay tuned. Hopefully I can get you a list of nominees the first part of next year. Until then, any suggestions are welcome and appreciated. I'd rather here from you now then later.
