In his life, John Quitman was many things: son, husband, father, lawyer, politician, military commander, friend, neighbor and mentor to many.

But his greatest gift to Natchez country, the place he lived for the bulk of his 60 years on earth, are his letters. Quitman was foremost a writer--and a good one. His letters are a snapshot of the history of our country, a panorama of Natchez, and a peak at the deepest personal thoughts of a man who during his day was the most popular man in Adams County.
