Thankfulness at Thanksgiving

By Rev. Bill McCullim

First Baptist Church

Vidalia

If any nation ought to be thankful to God and grateful for His goodness, it ought to be America. We ought to have an attitude of gratitude.

I Thessalonians 5:18 states, "in everything give thanks for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." This scripture gives us three principles concerning his attitude of gratitude that every child of God ought to have:

1. Gratitude is always to be expressed. Gratitude is not an option. You are just as obligated to give God your thanks as you are to give God your tithe.

2. Gratitude is always to be expansive. We are told to give thanks in "everything." If we were told to thank God in "most things" we could live with it. If we were told to thank God in "good things" we could find the verse a lot easier to live with. Be thankful in "everything."

3. Gratitude is always to be expected. We are to give thanks in all things "because this is the will of God." Everything you have is a gift from God, and God expects each of us to be grateful.

Let's remember this Thanksgiving season to have an attitude of gratitude.

(Editor's Note: Rev. Bill McCullin is now the full-time pastor at First Baptist Church Vidalia after serving previously in an interim role.)
