Story Archives: River low; caution urged

River low; caution urged

A rise of three to four feet is expected on the Mississippi River during the next 10 days.

The river level was at 19.8 feet on Tuesday at Natchez-Vidalia, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Vicksburg.

Kavanaugh Breazale of the Corps' public affairs office said the river stage is at its normal level for this time of the year.

"The average is around 21 feet in December," said Breazale.

He said residents should avoid walking on exposed levels of sand that emerge during low river states.

"These are local issues but the Corps always wants citizens to practice common sense safety," said Breazale. "River levels are low and can fluctuate tremendously and sinking sand areas can be anywhere and should be avoided."
