Story Archives: SEC West title was earned

SEC West title was earned

All right, just pretend Boise State did not lose to Nevada Friday night because I wrote this column before that game.

To you folks who are pulling for Boise State or TCU to beat the team they play in a BCS bowl to prove a point, you're missing the point.

The Broncos and Frogs will have a month to get ready for those games.

The difference with Boise and TCU is that they don't have to play the rugged schedules that SEC teams play.

There's no way either of those teams comes out unscathed playing LSU, Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama or South Carolina over seven weeks. And then throw in dangerous Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Florida and Tennessee.

I don't believe LSU has played an SEC game where at least a couple of players have been helped from the field, with at least one missing most of the game.

Boise State started out with Virginia Tech.

Tough game they won 33-30.

Then they had an open date, followed by Wyoming, Oregon State, New Mexico State, Toledo and San Jose State.

Imagine after that tough Virginia Tech game if they had to play Auburn, Alabama or Mississippi State.

Most of their starters have not had to play the entire game in eight of their contests.

That's brutal.

TCU started out with Oregon State, Tennessee Tech, Baylor, SMU, Colorado State, Wyoming, Brigham Young, Air Force, Nevada-Las Vegas, Utah and San Diego State.

San Diego State gave them a scare. Good thing the starters were able to rest in the 47-7 win over Utah, 48-6 win over UNLV, 38-7 rout of Air Force and on and on.

Auburn, LSU and Alabama have had to climb a rugged mountain to reach near the top.

TCU and Boise State got to ride the ski lift to the top.

LSU had to go play in the Swamp, at Jordan-Hare and in War Memorial.

Arkansas played between the hedges, at Jordan-Hare, at South Carolina and at Mississippi State.

Alabama played at South Carolina, at Arkansas, at Tennessee and at LSU. And most of the time the team they played was coming off an open date.

TCU played at Jonah Field in Wyoming, Spartan Stadium in San Jose in front of 30,000 people if it's full.

And we can't forget the menacing Kibble Dome at Idaho with 16,000 full capacity.

TCU played at Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium at Colorado State in front of 30,000 fans.

TCU visited Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas and played in front of 36,000 if it was full.

The Frogs played eight of their games this year in the state of Texas.

Now moving on to the SEC Championship Game.

Eight of the last 10 MVPs of the SEC title game were quarterbacks. So put your money on Cam Newton on Stephen Garcia now.

The last three were Greg McElroy, Tim Tebow and Ryan Perrilloux.

D.J. Shockley, Jason Campbell, David Greene, Matt Mauck and Rex Grossman were the other quarterbacks.

I believe South Carolina makes it interesting for a while, but in the end, Auburn just has too many weapons.

Steve Spurrier will set a record for visor throwing at about the time Newton takes off on his 12th run for 30 yards or more.

Sunday should be a fun day with the bowl selections. And I'll take any team from the SEC West over their opponent. There was no tougher place to play in 2010.
