Complex streets, park named after Vidalians The streets of Vidalia's new municipal and recreation complex will boast the names of those who have impacted the community, according to Mayor Hyram Copeland.
He announced Tuesday at the Vidalia Council meeting that the streets running through the new complex currently under construction will bear the names of longtime Vidalia dentist, the late Dr. John Fairbanks, former coach and teacher Johnny Lee Hoffpauir and Alderman Vernon Stevens. He also announced that the new city park will be named Dr. William T. Polk City Park.
"It is with great feelings that we do this for those who dedicated their lives to this community and the entire Miss-Lou area," said Copeland.
Dr. Fairbanks opened a dental clinic in Vidalia in 1956 and spent his life as a public servant. In addition to caring for the dental needs of the community, he was a former alderman, president of the Vidalia Quarterback Club and was involved in many other community organizations.
