Pledges to continue working together in unity to make Ferriday and Concordia a better place for all to live was one of themes Monday during a celebration of the life of slain Civil Rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King.

Ferriday attorney Anna Ferguson recalled the day when African-Americans had to sit on one side of Dr. Vogt's office, while whites sat on the other, when blacks had to go through the back door at Brocato's and when whites sat downstairs at the Arcade while African-Americans sat in the balcony.

"I always wanted to sit up there and throw popcorn," Ferguson told the gathering at Doty Road Church of God on Third Street during the 2nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday and Observance Service.
