Concordia corn acreage to total 25,000

Concordia Parish farmers will plant an estimated 25,000 acres of corn in the days ahead, an increase of 4,000 acres over last year's crop, according to County Agent Glen Daniels.

"The price for corn is up as are all commodities," said Daniels.

He said farmers are cautious about planting at the moment because of the possibilities of a freeze with a few more weeks of winter remaining.

"The cost of seed, due to the new technologies, are astronomical," said Daniels. "There is built in protection from a variety of threats to the corn. A freeze would kill the crop and that would be money lost."

Daniels said corn is planted up to mid-April in north Louisiana. He said after that, yield potential drops dramatically.

He said irrigation helps reduce aflatoxin, adding that corn responds well to irrigation.

Corn yielded 110 bushels per acre in Concordia in 2010, up from the 90 recorded in 2010. Corn yielded 150 bushels per acre in 2007, the highest in a five-year period. The average yield over the five years is 112 bushels per acre.
