Ferriday girls fall to Winnfield
Ferriday's Lady Trojans saw their season come to an end against No. 4 Winnfield on their home court as the Lady Tigers defeated Ferriday 60-42 in a Class 2A regional contest.
Ferriday, seeded No. 20, ends its season at 15-13.
The Lady Trojans advanced to the second round last year before losing to John Curtis.
Winnfield, 24-4, returned all five starters from a team which lost to University Lab 70-64 in the Class 2A semifinals.
"They were just too strong," said Ferriday High girls coach Lisa Abron. "Everything we tried to do they counter-attacked. They are a very experienced team."
Winnfield, backed by a crowd that filled up half the Ferriday gym, jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead before Chanta Poole nailed a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it 4-3.
But the Lady Tigers were relentless on offense, pounding the boards to lead 9-5 with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter, extending that lead to 19-11 by the end of the first quarter.
Winnfield used pressure defense to extend its lead to 26-13 with 3:18 remaining in the first half. The Lady Tigers led 30-18 at halftime.
The Lady Tigers outscored Ferriday 32-22 in the second half.
Chante Poole, playing her last game as a Lady Trojan, led Ferriday with 21 points.
Poole left the game for the final three minutes of the second quarter to step outside the gym.
"She was hyperventilating a bit," Abron said. "The game started at such a fast pace and it was so hot in the gym."
Senior T'Keyah Fletcher was bothered by shin splints during the contest.
ULM signee Christina Gray scored 14 points for the Lady Tigers.
Anna Phillips, who is also being looked at by state school's, and Chant Lewis also scored in double figures for Winnfield.
The Lady Trojans advanced to the second round with a 43-37 upset win over No. 13 Lake Arthur Thursday in Lake Arthur.
The contest was tied a 10-10 after one period before the Lady Tigers outscored Ferriday 6-5 in the second period for a 16-15 halftime advantage.
The Lady Trojans found their offense in the third period while still playing tight defense, outscoring Converse 25-9 in the third period. Ferriday outscored Converse 13-12 in the final period.
"It was an exciting game," Abron said. "We did a lot of good things on defense. Everybody stepped up and we played a lot smarter. We took our lumps early in the season and I was beginning to second-guess myself for playing a tough schedule early, but I think it paid off."
Despite playing with an ankle injury that required her to come out of the game at times, Fletcher made secveral shots from beyond the 3-point arc in the first half that allowed Ferriday to be down by just one point, 16-15, at halftime.
Fletcher led the Lady Trojans in scoring with 16 points while Poole had 13. Elizabeth Guidry led Lake Arthur with a game-high 19 points. |
