Alexander bill defines levee maintenance responsibility U.S. Rep. Rodney Alexander, R-Quitman, filed legislation that would require the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to take responsibility for major maintenance for the Red-Ouachita River Basin Levees of Arkansas and Louisiana. Regarding his bill, Alexander issued the following remarks:
"With FEMA's recent announcement to withhold its 'without levee' approach, it's time to address whose responsibility it is to get our levees up to par. Until this point, these roles have not been clearly defined.
"In the past, the Corps has had levee maintenance under its control and budget, and this is where it should stay. Many local and state levee boards lack the revenue stream to bring our levees to a standard that can be certified. Moreover, many flood control structures have suffered severely from a long-term lack of funding for repairs, maintenance and upgrades.
"My bill puts the burden of responsibility on the shoulders of the federal government, and not on the backs of local levee districts."
Alexander represents the 5th Congressional District and serves on the House Appropriations Committee. Alexander founded and serves as co-chairman of the Congressional Levee Caucus. |
