Sign Kenny Chesney -- again I wonder if Sean Payton still has Kenny Chesney's phone number. Sounds like he may be needing some replacement players sometime soon.
Chesney signed a one-day contract in 2007. The Saints actually held a press conference at the Cincinnati Bengals stadium to announce the signing day before their preseason contest with the Bengals.
Payton mentioned that Chesney had a size seven shoe, which was the most difficult part of getting equipment. He got the No. 7 jersey to go with his high school number.
Saint assistant coach Joe Vitt called it a dog-and-pony show.
Payton said Vitt was pouting and Chesney was grinning all during the practice.
Chesney did all the drills and at the end of practice Payton said Chesney would be on the receiving end of a punt. He told the team if Chesney caught the ball, the team would have the next Monday off in New Orleans. This was before a Thursday game against Kansas City.
Steve Weatherford hit a catchable kick and Chesney corralled it in.
"I'm telling you this is one of those moments when eighty-five grown men looked like they had just been let out of school early," Payton said. "Vitt wasn't smiling. The Jersey guy wasn't charmed by it. Maybe if we had signed Bruce Springsteen."
Maybe if the lockout continues into the fall, Tom Benson can have Chesney on the field during the game and then let him play at halftime, because otherwise there are going to be a lot of empty seats.
And if that works out, maybe Benson can sign some other celebrities.
Ashton Kutcher was a wide receiver for his high school football team in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Tom Welling, who played Clark Kent on Smallville, played baseball, basketball and was a goalkeeper for his soccer team in high school in Michigan.
Brad Pitt played tennis at Kickapoo High School in Springfield, Mo. Attending a high school with that name, you had to be tough.
Tom Cruise and Kevin Costner certainly have some athletic experience from their movie roles. Or you could sign their stunt doubles.
Tim McGraw certainly has the genes being the son of Tug McGraw.
Garth Brooks may be a bit over the hill, but he spent spring training with three professional baseball teams.
Master P fancies himself as a basketball player after two tryouts for Charlotte Hornets and Toronto Raptors, so maybe he would be willing to try out on the gridiron.
Boyd Tinsley. A violinist, you ask? This Dave Matthews Band member is absolutely ripped. He has his own tennis tournament and played doubles with John McEnroe and Pete Sampras and is also a friend of Andy Roddick.
Maybe he can ask Roddick how he lost to Drew Brees.
Maybe even Justin Bieber can try out. That would help ticket sales. Just keep him off the field during the real action.
Man, they need to settle this thing soon. |
