Story Archives: River to crest Thursday

River to crest Thursday
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Mississippi River is expected to crest at Vidalia at 49.5 feet on Thursday, April 1, according to the Vicksburg District Corps of Engineers river summary and forecast.

Flood stage is 48 feet.

Fifth District Levee Board President Reynold Minsky said the high water stages are not causing any problems along the mainline Mississippi River levee.

"We're not seeing any seepage," said Minsky. "It's probably because the aquifers are so low. In fact, the high stages may be a good thing in replenishing the aquifers."

He said unless heavy rains fall in the Ohio Valley, that the chances for flooding appear unlikely.

"I think, otherwise, we're looking a slow fall," said Minsky.
