Story Archives: Soybean acreage on the rise

Soybean acreage on the rise
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
County Agent Glen Daniels said this week that 85 percent of the corn crop has been planted while farmers will turn their full attention to planting both soybeans and cotton in April.

Several thousand acres of soybeans have already been planted in the Monterey area, Daniels reported.

He said between 75,000 and 90,000 acres may be devoted to soybeans this year, especially since the prices for beans and other commodities are high.

On Monday, Bunge reported that the per bushel futures price for September corn was $6.39, November soybeans $13.50 and July wheat $7.66.

The soybean crop averaged a yield of 36 bushels per acre in 2010, up from 20 in 2006 and 2009, and 25 in 2008. The 45 bushel-per-acre yield in 2007 was the highest during the past five years. The five-year average is 29.2 bushels per acre.
