Catahoula deputy to receive national award

Catahoula Parish Sheriff's Office investigator Toney Edwards will be honored by the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children for his investigative work into a murder.

Sheriff James Kelley said his office was notified of the award by the FBI. He said the award is given annually.

Edwards is being cited for his investigative work into the murder of 12-year-old Lexis Roberts, whose body was found near Harrisonburg.

Thomas Steven Sanders, 53, of Las Vegas, Nev., has been indicted by a federal Grand Jury in the homicide.

Edwards, who is 47, has been in law enforcement since 1990. He said the award was a surprise.

"It was a shocker," said Edwards, "especially for a small department like ours. It's a real honor."

Edwards said he will be going to Washington in May to accept the award.
