Senate districts shift in Concordia Voters in a number of Concordia Parish precincts will have a new face representing them in the Legislature next year according to redistricting plans approved by lawmakers in the special session that ended Wednesday.
State Sen. Francis Thompson's District 34 was redrawn to incorporate a significant portion of Concordia Parish as part of the redistricting process.
The Legislature convened a special session on redistricting March 20.
"I'm pleased with the change and look forward to spending time in Concordia Parish and accomplishing a lot for the citizens," said Thompson, D-Delhi.
Thompson picked up all of Concordia Parish with the exception of the greater Vidalia area, which will remain in Sen. Neil Riser's District 32. Riser is a Republican from Columbia.
Every 10 years, the Legislature must redraw the state's voting lines to reflect shifts in the population as indicated by the Census.
The 2010 Census found only two parishes in northeast Louisiana showed population growth. The two parishes were Concordia and Ouachita.
Because of declining population in other parishes in the Louisiana Delta, Thompson said his district had to pick up an additional 10,000 voters. At the same time, Thompson also noted it was important to maintain the minority majority status of his district.
"We had to be mindful of the minority numbers so the district didn't retrogress," said Thompson.
