Standing firm under intense criticism

State Sen. Bob Kostelka of Monroe is a good man.
You could have been led to believe otherwise if you paid attention to the less-than-favorable news coverage Kostelka received during the special session on redistricting.

The Legislature convened the special session March 20 and wrapped it up the first week or so of April. Redrawing state legislative and congressional districts on the heels of the 2010 Census was the focal point of the session. Tempers flared and feelings were hurt as lawmakers engaged in cut-throat politicking to protect their respective districts in the nasty process that is redistricting.

Kostelka found himself in hot water early in the session over remarks he made during a Senate and Governmental Affair Committee (SGA) hearing. SGA is the committee in the Senate that was charged with hearing any and all legislation that dealt with redistricting. Kostelka is chairman of SGA.

At one point during a committee hearing, Kostelka, according to media reports, called Sen. Lydia Jackson of Shreveport a "little lady." The remark was deemed offensive because Jackson is a female and she's black.
