Services Monday for former Ferriday Mayor Woodie Davis Funeral services were held Monday for former Ferriday Mayor L.W. "Woodie" Davis, who died April 22 at the age of 93.
A World War II veteran who was awarded the Purple Heart, Davis, a Jonesville native, served 28 consecutive years as mayor, stepping down in 1976. He also served in a number of civic organizations and was past commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Davis was first elected mayor in 1948. He told the Sentinel in 1976 that the installation of the town's sewage system in 1954 was one of his major accomplishments.
"I remember when I first came in office raw sewage was running in open ditches when it rained real hard," he said.
He said a new water treatment plant was built when he entered office, "but didn't last but about six months. You could only run it about eight hours a day and then you had to shut it down to backwash it and that broke it."
A new plant was built in 1954 and another in 1963 following the passage of a bond issue.
Davis said the police department following World War II consisted of "one rundown police car and two policemen to run it.
"We didn't even have a radio back then...but in 1953 we got a little help from the Sheriff's Department and Dr. H.H. Ratcliff, who gave us the money to purchase some radio equipment and base station."
