Committee, fishermen property owners discussed Lake Concordia

The Concordia Parish Police Jury is considering enlarging the Lake Concordia Advisory Board by two members and will invite representatives of the Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries Department (LWFD) to a public meeting to discuss fishing in the lake.

These and several issues emerged during the Jury's regular meeting Monday night before a packed house of Lake Concordia property owners and fishermen.

Fishermen expressed frustration over lake levels, some indicating that the fish spawn this year was devastated due to the low lake stage. They asked that LWFD be contacted to develop a plan to improve fishing.

Additionally, they said the lack of good fishing was hurting the economy, adding that when the fishing is good local businesses benefit but suffered when it is poor. The fishermen also said that a gauge was needed on the lake and that discussions over a proper pool stage should be held.

Meanwhile, members of the Lake Concordia Advisory Committee attempted to clarify what they called misconceptions about the lake, ranging from weirs to management of the lake's level.

"The lake was not drawn down as some people think," said committee member Johnny Patrick. "A lot of people seem to think that we did that, but we didn't."

He said the lake was actually lower "by several feet" in 2006 into the summer of 2007. He said a 2 x 12 piece of timber was placed on top of the new weir in 2006, raising the weir's height by 11.25 inches.

Patrick said repairs needed to be made to the old weir, but can't be done until the lake "is at a safe level. We don't want to draw down the lake to do the work."
