Softball league numbers increase Five years ago Vidalia Girls Softball League commissioner Greg Young would have never envisioned having a waiting list for his league.
But after more than 500 girls signed up to play this year, that's just what Young and officials with the league had to do.
"I hate it because we have never had to turn down any child," Young said. "But we are at capacity and there's nothing we could do."
The league started fast-pitch last year and has gone exclusively to fast-pitch this year. Vidalia and Ferriday leagues combined last year.
"We always have at least 50 and sometimes 100 girls sign up after the draft," Young said. "This year we were full at the draft."
The league has 10 T-ball teams, eight 7-8 teams, eight 9-10 teams, six 11-12 teams and 13 16-18 teams.
"We expected a lot of kids, but not quite this many," Young said. "We've got way more players than coaches. But it's just a combination of things. We're trying to be an instructional league. It's not all about winning, it's about the learning process. And we take input from the board, coaches and advisors. It's a team effort."
The league will be hosting Little League district tournaments in all age groups and part of the state tournament this year.
"It's been almost overwhelming," Young said. "But fortunately we have a lot of people pitching in."
Young said he still gets a few requests for slow-pitch softball.
"If the demand is there, we will try and have a slow-pitch league in the fall," he said. "But we had so many people wanting to go to fast-pitch." |
