Story Archives: Parish teams start football

Parish teams start football
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
With a limited number of practice days because of school closing two days earlier on May 18 due to the rising Mississippi River, Vidalia High and Ferriday High's football teams hit the ground running Monday as spring football practice began across the state.

Last year, the Louisiana High School Athletic Association voted to cut back the number of practice days from 15 to 10 days and prohibited a spring game at the end of those practice days.

That's not a problem in Concordia Parish, where the Viking and Trojan football teams will be pushing to get in eight days because of the earlier school closing.

At Ferriday High, newly-hired head football coach Richard Oliver welcomed 28 players to the field.

"We've still got some guys getting some issues straight, but the ones that are out there are getting a good look," Oliver said. "It always can be better or worse."

Oliver, who was an assistant football coach at Zachary High School last year before accepting the Ferriday job last month, said the players need to be in better shape.

"But the good thing is we don't have to play anybody right now," he said. "We've got a long way to go. It's a progression, but we're going to get there."

At Vidalia High, second-year Viking head football coach Gary Paul Parnham was holding spring drills on the adult softball park as Dee Faircloth Viking Football Stadium is being re-crowned and an underground sprinkler system is being installed.

"We're planting grass seeds and a high class and high caliber bermuda that is top of the line. It is going to be nice."

Parnham welcomed 44 players out to practice Monday.

"We had 70 sign up, but we had several who have not turned in their physicals," Parnham said. "I'm expecting to have about 55. We have a number of guys who haven't played before. We're starting from the ground up and teaching technique and keeping it basic."
