Ferriday, Vidalia complete drills Vidalia High and Ferriday High completed spring football drills this week, having to cut their 10 maximum days short because school was dismissed two days early due to the rising Mississippi River.
"It went real well," said second-year Viking coach Gary Paul Parnham. "We had some bright spots and surprises. We've got some incoming freshmen who caught our eyes. At this point right now we are better than we were last year. The kids are learning and picking up a lot of what we have been teaching them."
Parnham now begins his offseason program.
"We're expecting a lot of participation because that is going to be crucial to how well we do next season," he said.
First-year Ferriday head coach Richard Oliver said he was pleased with the first week, but hopes to increase the number of players.
Oliver, who replaces Chad Harkins, who is now head coach at Jena High School, had 34 out for the spring.
"We can always get better," Oliver said. "We're mainly just trying to get familiar with each other. The guys have great attitudes."
Oliver said he will start his summer program on May 31. He also plans on bringing in two assistant coaches.
"Football is basically year-round," Oliver said. "You have to keep working if you want to be successful."
Both teams will compete, along with Block High and Delhi Charter, in the Vidalia Jamboree on Saturday, August 27 at Dee Faircloth Viking Stadium. |
