Farmers facing obstacles: drought, seepage, deer

Although the Mississippi River is almost 12 feet above flood stage, Concordia's crops on the inside of the mainland levee are in dire need of rainfall although there are some exceptions.

"Even cotton needs a rain," according to County Agent Glen Daniels. "And while we got a problem with dry weather, the high stage of the Mississippi is causing seepage problems in some areas, including Lake St. John, Scotland and Moriah. It's damaged a lot of corn and soybeans in some of these places."

Additionally, Daniels said some farmers are having problems with deer.

"The water is driving the deer inside the levees and they are eating lots of corn and soybeans, especially on the backside of Lake Concordia," Daniels said. "Some farmers have tried scare guns but it seems like the deer get use to it."

Daniels said some farmers may request permission from the Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries Department that permits be issued so that some of the deer can be killed.
