Story Archives: Delta Music Fest set Sept. 10

Delta Music Fest set Sept. 10
posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
The Delta Music Festival will be held Sept. 10 in Ferriday with the Hall of Fame guitarist James Burton and the Hemphills, a gospel group, scheduled for induction into the Delta Music Museum.

The festival has been held the first Saturday in April since it opened in 2002.

"We had to put it off because we no longer receive the grant money to help us put this festival together," said Secretary of State Tom Schedler. "(Former Secretary of State) Al Ater has agreed to help me raise the funds needed.

"We need to solicit about $15,000 from businesses to assist us. The state cut back on the money for museums, but we made a commitment to keep this going and we're looking forward to having an outstanding festival."

Mayor Glen McGlothin said he doesn't understand why the state is cutting funding to state museums: "We want to be known as the state of culture and music and they are cutting us down to nothing."

McGlothin said the move to September will benefit the festival.

"There's just so much going on in early April, such as the Catfish Festival (Winnsboro)," he said. "This is going to be an outstanding festival."
