Dry conditions blamed for levee fires

Firefighters with Concordia Fire District No. 2 have been kept busy fighting levee fires caused by dry conditions around the parish.

On Sunday afternoon, the fire district responded to a call about a vehicle on fire on the levee past Deer Park.

"Upon arrival we found the vehicle fully involved and the grass around it, also," said Concordia Fire District No. 2 Fire Chief Nolen Cothren. "We extinguished the vehicle and grass fire and noticed down the levee a large plume of smoke. We hoped it was a farmer burning off a field but a man told us it was the levee."

Cothren said firefighters found the west side of the levee fully involved in a grass fire.

"We immediately called for assistance from Monterey with tankers and their brush trucks," Cothren said. "We finally managed to get it under control. The next day, after lunch, we received another call for a levee fire. It was in the same vicinity as the previous one. Again we called for assistance from Monterey Fire District No. 1. Within a short time we had it under control and returned to the station."

On Tuesday, Concordia Fire District responded to yet another levee fire 30 miles down from their station on Airport Road.

"Again we notified Monterey Fire District 1 and they sent a tanker and brush truck along with our engine from Deer Park and one of our 3,500 gallon tankers," Cothren said. "Upon arrival we found the levee on fire and it was spreading into the nearby woods. We attacked the fire as best we could and someone notified Wildlife and Fisheries who got someone to bring two large tractors with scraper blades. They cut fire lanes around the fire and we used our water to extinguish it."

Cothren emphasized that people need to be aware that there is a state and parish burn ban in place.
