Story Archives: Hotels, restaurant eye west side of Vidalia

Hotels, restaurant eye west side of Vidalia

Two hotel companies and a restaurant are considering locating on the west side of Vidalia due to the new recreational complex under development, Mayor Hyram Copeland said Tuesday.

Copeland said bids for the recreational complex, to be located beside and behind Walmart along Hwy. 84, will be let this month.

The work is being re-bid after original bids considered last March ranged from $4.75 to $5.72 million. Recreation District 3 board chairman Mark Archer said the project was reduced slightly in scope.

The complex will feature tennis and basketball courts as well as baseball, softball and soccer fields and a number of other features.

"We've had inquiries on hotels and restaurants on that end of town," Copeland said. "Two different groups are interested in building a hotel across the highway from Walmart. We're in discussion now. It's a perfect location for a 50 to 60 room Holiday Inn or Best Western, or something like that."

Additionally, he said negotiations are underway with a restaurant firm, which he didn't identify.

"All a result of the complex, we anticipate state, district and local tournaments coming into our area will result in people coming to Vidalia who will spend their dollars here," said Copeland. "We think this will be an economic boost for us."
