Grass sprigs planted at VHS field

The start of each football season brings new aspirations for success on the field.

For Vidalia High School, the field will be just as new.

A group of about 10 volunteers met early Tuesday morning at Dee Faircloth Viking Stadium to plant grass sprigs, which by the first game of the season on August 27 will be a cause for a "Celebration".

The hybrid bermuda grass sprigs planted, named Celebration, is the same variety of grass on the field at LSU's Tiger Stadium, according to LSU turfgrass professor, Dr. Ron Strahan.

Strahan is the director of the LSU AgCenter's Field of Excellence program, which works to improve high school fields across the state.

"In a years time this will be the best field in the state," Strahan said. "It will also provide a softer, safer playing surface that should cut down on injuries."

The Field of Excellence program, which helped make improvements to Ferriday High School's field last year, will continue to work with VHS until the beginning of the season to assure the new grass is properly cared for.
