Police Jury approves redistricting plan BY JARED LOVETT The Concordia Parish Police Jury approved a reapportionment plan on an 8-1 roll call vote Monday night with juror Willie Dunbar casting the lone negative vote.
The plan was proposed by Parish Planner Oliver Schulz following meetings with jurors over the past weeks.
Reapportionment is required to satisfy guidelines set by the Department of Justice and is based on the most recent census numbers. According to the parish plan, most districts will remain the same, with the exception of minor changes to Districts 2, 4A and 5A .
Voters in District 4A in the area from Rabb Road to Levens Addition Road have been moved to District 5, while District 2 added the Vidalia Manor and Vidalia Meadows apartment complexes, according to the plan.
Dunbar said he opposed the inclusion of the apartment complexes in District 2, which added 119 people, because the complexes only added 35 registered voters. He said none voted in the last election.
Dunbar said, "I want to keep it like it is."
Schulz pointed out that the Department of Justice is interested in the number of voters and the percentage of each race in the districts, not the voting records.
A district is required to have a 55 percent minority population to be considered a minority district. District 2 will have a 66 percent minority population under the new plan. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
