Relay for Life raises $190,000

Even a last-minute change of venue couldn't slow down one of the top American Cancer Society's Relay for Life.

The relay raised $190,000, with the committee meeting again in a few weeks to get an official count. Last year, the relay raised $210,000.

The Miss-Lou Relay for Life ranks second highest per capita in the Mid-South Division (six states) and third in the United States.

The relay was postponed from May because of the high Mississippi River waters, which also forced it to be changed from the Vidalia Riverfront to the Natchez Bluffs.

The event had been held on the Vidalia Riverfront since 2000. It had previously been held in Natchez.

"We just want to thank the City of Natchez for all they did for Relay this year," said Miss-Lou Chairwoman Bridgid Martin. "We had a lot of survivors come out in the heat and participate. We want to thank all the teams and sponsors. We could not do it without them."

Thirty-one teams signed up to have tents on the rescheduled Relay night.

When the date was pushed back, 15 teams had to drop mostly because of scheduling conflicts, but those teams still did fundraising, Martin said. Eighteen teams participated without tent sites.
