Redistricting plan finalized

The parish reapportionment plan approved last week by the Concordia Parish Police Jury was adopted as an ordinance Monday night.

The jury also passed a motion Monday defining the territorial limits and boundaries of the precincts, as well as establishing polling places. Polling places will remain the same except in Precinct 5-1, which will be temporarily moved from Louisiana Technical College, Shelby Jackson Campus, to the Ferriday U-Pak.

Under the new reapportionment plan, the area from Rabb Road to Levens Addition Road, previously in District 4A, has been moved to District 5. District 2 added the Vidalia Manor and Vidalia Meadows apartment complexes.

In other business, the Jury denied a request from the Department of Veteran's Affairs to increase its current $679 monthly budget by $50 in 2012.

Finance Committee chairman Randy Temple said the jury should study the budget before granting the raise. Other jurors echoed Temple's sentiment as reflected in the 5-3 roll call vote denying the request. Jurors Cary Cook, Jimmy Jernigan and Red Tiffee voted for the motion, while Jerry Beatty, Willie Dunbar, Joe Parker, Whest Shirley and Randy Temple voted against.

Concordia Parish Veterans Service Officer C.C. Kimball said more than $7.3 million is paid to the parish veterans yearly. Of that total, he said $4 million was in actual cash payments for service connected disabilities and pensions for low income veterans.

Juror Jimmy Jernigan said the Jury didn't need to wait to give the local office an answer for additional funding.

"Our veterans are receiving millions a year for their service to our country through our local veterans office," he said. "If the Police Jury can't give them $50 more a month then we might as well shut down the doors to the courthouse."
