Riverland Medical Center experienced its first month in the red in May, showing a deficit of $72,000.

It's the first time in a number of months that the facility has shown a deficit.

"If it had not been for the flood, we would have been all right," said Riverland Chairman Jim Graves. "Our admissions were way down. Otherwise I believe we would have had a $140,000 profit. But it affected everybody."

Revenue for May was $867,090 after deductions, while expenses were $1.21 million.

"We had no more than six patients in case we would have had a mandatory evacuation," said finance officer Lynda Jones. "We're averaging 12 patients for the month of June."

Rusty Eldridge gave a presentation on healthcare finance, telling the board what is involved in the budget and how the expenditures are used throughout the hospital.
