Anders views 'busy' session

Rep. Andy Anders said the Legislature passed a balanced budget during the past session without curtailing vital state services.

"It was a busy and hectic but in the end I think we came out pretty good," said Anders. "The budget received a unanimous vote of the House and I've never seen that."

He said the redistricting plan passed by the Legislature has been approved by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Anders said House figures show that the state's population rose by 1.4 percent during the past 10 years, while Ascension and Livingston parishes had the greatest population increases at 39 percent each. St. Bernard's population showed the greatest decrease at 46 percent, followed by Cameron at 31 percent and Orleans at 29 percent.

As a result of the session, Anders said voters will consider five constitutional amendments at the polls on Oct. 22 involving medical malpractice, tobacco proceeds, Rainy Day Fund, sale of immovable property and unfunded accrued liability.

He also viewed other issues handled by legislators during a session that ended June 23.
