Story Archives: Sports complex construction on tap

Sports complex construction on tap

Recreation Board No. 3 Chairman Marc Archer said construction should begin within the next 40 days on the district's new recreational complex.

The recreation board has officially accepted the low bid of Womack and Sons Construction Group of Harrisonburg to build the complex near Walmart.

Womack bid $3.45 million, lower than Lincoln Builders of Baton Rouge at $3.895 million and Cecil D. Gassiott, LLC at $3.956 million.

"I've been involved in this deal for six years and to finally see it come around is very exciting," Archer said. "This has been a long time coming. It's been a joint effort with the City of Vidalia and it's just great to see it become a reality."

Original bids in April came in too high, forcing those connected with the complex to find ways to cut costs. Womack's original big was $4.75 million.

Archer said the total cost of the project will be about $6 million, but the benefits will be substantial.

"This is really going to be an asset for Vidalia and the surrounding area," he said.
