Daniels enters retirement after 35 years as county agent

They say that retirement brings greener pastures, but what does retirement bring when you have spent your career making pastures greener?

This is the question facing Glen Daniels, who is retiring after 36 years as a county agent.

Daniels' job has been to assist homeowners and farmers with their agricultural problems ranging from simple, like how to properly care for tomato plants, to complicated, like telling farmers which varieties of crops will give them higher yields.

"My favorite part of being county agent is helping people," Daniels said. "Not only farmers, but we have homeowners with lawn and turf and people that grow gardens."

Daniels' interest in farming started early, growing up involved with 4-H organizations before graduating, with honors, from Southern Union, a small college near Auburn, Alabama, with a degree in agriculture education in 1974.

After graduating, Daniels served as county agent and 4-H club agent for West Feliciana Parish. Daniels received his master's degree in extension education from LSU during his tenure in West Feliciana before taking over as the county agent in Concordia and Catahoula parishes in 1983.

However, Daniels is quick to acknowledge he has received help from the community during his time as county agent. Since starting as a county agent, Daniels said there have been many changes in agriculture including the types of crops planted and how they are planted. However, with the cooperation of farmers in the area Daniels has been able to keep up with the changes.
