Huff enjoying new post as county agent

She has only been on the job for a month, but new county agent, Nan Huff, has already had a historical tenure.

Dealing with record water levels on the Mississippi and one of the most extreme droughts since the 1800s, Huff said she "hit the ground running" when she started June 1.

Huff worked with long-time county agent, Glen Daniels, in June to help acclimate herself to the new job, which requires building a network with farmers and homeowners in Concordia and Catahoula parishes.

"It has been nice meeting everyone," Huff said.

However, Huff said it is a busy time of the year to learn on the job, but having Daniels around for her first month has helped.

While the job may be new to Huff, farming has always been a part of her life. Huff grew up on a farm on Lake St. John and still farms in the area with her husband, Jim. They grow a variety of rice, named Della, that is sold to specialty and gourmet food stores.

Education has also prepared Huff for the job. Huff received a bachelor of science degree from LSU in 1979 and earned a Masters in Agriculture Science from Colorado State University. In 2007, Huff earned a doctoral degree in animal sciences in the field of equine equine endocrinology and recently completed a post-doctorate degree from LSU.

The past 10 years, Huff worked in the LSU veterinary hospital as the equine technician supervisor. Huff supervised 12 technicians for the hospital which offers 24-hour care, intensive care and emergency services for large animals.

Huff said her experience in the hospital helped prepare her for new gig as county agent.

"Plant and animal diagnostics are very similar," Huff said, "You have to get the necessary background information to come up with a diagnosis."
