Flood costs in Vidalia total $2 million

Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland said today (Wednesday) the city's costs for flood preparation along the riverfront and estimated costs for recovery will amount to about $2 million.

Bids will be opened Tuesday in Vidalia for removal of the Hesco baskets used to provide flood protection to businesses and the convention center along riverfront. The projected cost for this work is about $750,000 to $800,000, the mayor said. Copeland said five contractors may bid on the project.

The preparation work and recovery work follow record flooding along the Mississippi River during May and June. The river crested more than 13 feet above flood stage (48 feet) at Vidalia.

He said cost for preparation work was about $950,000, which included employee overtime, use of city equipment, payment to contractors for installation of the Hesco baskets and other work.

FEMA categorizes preparation work as Plan B, Copeland said, while recovery work is known as Plan A.

"This has hit the town for a pretty good lick financially," Copeland said. "We have probably spent about $1.2 million out of the general fund and hope to get reimbursed soon."
