Story Archives: Dixon looking to get back on court

Dixon looking to get back on court
by Joey Martin - posted E-mail Story E-mail Story | Print Story Print Story
Baton Rouge Community College sophomore forward and former Vidalia standout Torrey Dixon has faced his fair share of adversity this year, but he believes his faith in God will help him continue playing basketball at a high level.

On April 9, Dixon collapsed in a pick-up game with his Baton Rouge Community College teammates. To this day, doctors are still unsure as to why Dixon collapsed on the court without a pulse. Dixon visited with a couple of doctors since then, and has received a difference of opinions on being able to return to the court, as one doctor told him that he could play again and another was hesitant to give him the green light.

"Last time I went (the doctor) really didn't say anything," Dixon said. "He said 'Don't get out there and play a full college level game right now,' but that was back in May."

Dixon led Baton Rouge Community College in scoring a year ago with 16 points per game and was being looked at by other Division I-A schools, among those were LSU, Louisiana Tech, McNeese State, Southeastern Louisiana and Mississippi State.

Dixon believes that he will make his way back onto the court as early as this season.

"First I just have to keep my faith in God and keep praying," Dixon said. "I expect to get back out there. I have a strong feeling I'll be back out there. The season is a long time away. It's July now, and we don't start until November. I have to be mentally tough and be ready to get back in shape for this season."

Dixon knows that the rode back to the court won't be an easy one, but he believes that everything happens for a reason.

"Very important things happen in life that you can't explain," Dixon said. "You can't let those stop you from living your life. Everybody who is having problems mentally or who are physically hurt, just take some time out before you go to sleep, get on your knees and pray to God. Give it to God. Don't doubt your faith in God and keep positive."

Even though Dixon plans on playing this year, his doctors still haven't released him. Dixon will need his doctors to release him to be able to play for the Bears in November. His next appointment is set for August.

It might be Dixon's heart that could keep him from playing next year, but it's also the same heart that gives him a chance to play with his positive outlook on the entire situation. And it's that same type of heart that helped the Vikings win a state championship a year ago.

"I have my mind trained that I will get back out there. I have my faith in God," Dixon said.
