Cocodrie not untouchable Cocodrie Bayou -- a major drainage artery for the parish -- is not untouchable.
Keith Cascio, the Scenic Rivers Coordinator for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife & Fisheries, told the Ferriday Rotary Club Thursday that with a proper plan, agencies such as the Concordia Parish Police Jury, can clean up the bayou.
"If something needed to be done, a person or body can't go in and just start digging," he said. "We would have to have a plan to deal with some of the issues. But that would not be a problem."
Cascio said he rode a boat on the bayou at Ferriday and was surprised how navigable it is.
"Dredging is not a problem," he said. "It's more like a containment problem. There are such slight angles. I was surprised at how deep it is."
Cascio said one of the bigger problems is trees falling into the stream, probably as a result of herbicide spraying over the years.
Cascio said that Cocodrie's Scenic River designation does not actually start at Lake Concordia, but at Little Cross Bayou near Poole Road and goes to Wild Cow Bayou.
Cascio said for Bayou Cocodrie located in the Ferriday city limits to be labeled as Scenic River would have to be done through an act of the state legislature.
Once nominated, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will conduct a study on the stream and decide whether or not it meets the minimum qualifying criteria. If it does, it will be recommended for inclusion by the Secretary.
Cascio said work needs to be done where the Vidalia Canal flows into Cocodrie. For the full story, subscribe to the The Concordia Sentinel's NEW E-Edition! |
