The Dr. William Thomas Polk City Park to be located in the new recreation complex in Vidalia has received a big boost with a $250,000 grant from the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation & Tourism.

The Town of Vidalia was notified recently of the grant for Phase 1 of the park. The grant is funded through the U.S. Department of the Interior.

The park will be built in five phases and a $250,000 grant will be sought for each phase, totaling $1.2 million.

"We submitted a master plan for the park," said City of Vidalia grant writer Theresa Dennis. "We're excited about receiving this grant."

Phase 1 includes three basketball courts with one being a lighted and covered court.

Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland commended everyone involved in working on the grant.

"We're excited about this and we're confident about receiving a grant for the next phase next year," Copeland said.
