Story Archives: Schools, DA to address truancy

Schools, DA to address truancy

District Attorney Brad Burget and the school boards in Concordia and Catahoula parishes are working together to address truancy issues during the 2011-12 school year.

Under state law, parents who don't send their children to school could be fined and jailed.

Burget said addressing the truancy problem is a top priority.

"It has come to my attention that truancy is a growing concern for school officials," Burget said Monday. "We want parents to be aware of the serious consequences for excessive absences from school."

He said school officials may refer parents to the DA's office for appropriate action, which could include fines and/or a jail sentence of up to 30 days for each violation.

"The main thing is parents are ultimately responsible for their child's regular attendance at school," Burget said. "When a parent allows this behavior, either knowingly or unknowingly, there can be serious implications."
